Schrijven: writing, explained in plain English
Schrijven tests whether you can write short, correct Dutch for everyday situations: forms, messages, and simple letters. It rewards clear and correct over clever and complicated.
What this part actually tests
You complete short, practical writing tasks: filling in a form with personal details, writing a short message to cancel an appointment, letting your employer know you are sick, or asking a question in writing. The examiners are looking for correct basic sentence structure, the right words for the situation, and a message that clearly does its job, not literary flair.
Example style, not a real exam question
Prompt: You are sick and cannot go to work today. Write a short message to your manager.
"Beste [naam], Ik ben helaas ziek en kan vandaag niet werken. Ik denk dat ik morgen weer beter ben. Met vriendelijke groet, [naam]"
Notice how short and plain this is: a greeting, the message, a reason, and a closing. That structure, reused across situations, is worth more than fancy vocabulary.
Tips that actually help
- Keep sentences short. Two correct short sentences beat one long sentence with a grammar mistake in it.
- Learn set phrases for common situations: calling in sick, requesting an appointment, thanking someone, apologizing. Reuse them.
- Practice on real forms you already have: a gemeente form, a doctor's intake form, a job application.
