Use “de” with…

- ✓Days, months, and seasons (de zomer)
Use “het” with…
- ✓Diminutives in -je (het huisje, het meisje)
- ✓Many words starting with ge-
- ✓Various everyday terms by heart (het boek)
- ✓The exception: het kind
Golden tip
Never learn a word on its own. Always learn it with the article: not “tafel”, but “de tafel”; not “boek”, but “het boek”. That way the article sticks in your memory.
